چکیده

Abstract Ground-level ozone (O 3 ) is a widespread air pollutant causing extensive injuries in plants. However, its effects on perennial energy crops remain poorly understood due to technical difficulties cultivating fast-growing shrubs for biomass production under O treatment the field. Here we present results of two-year evaluation framework which willow ( Salix sachalinensis F. Schmid) were exposed ambient (AOZ) or elevated (EOZ) two successive growing seasons (2014, 2015) and treated with 0 (EDU0) 400 mg L −1 (EDU400) ethylenediurea spray second season. In 2014, EOZ altered chemical composition both top young fallen leaves, novel mechanism decreasing Mg leaves while highly enriching it was revealed EOZ. 2015, EDU400 alleviated EOZ-induced decreases leaf fresh mass dry ratio (FM/DM) per area (LMA). While protected against suppression maximum rate at can fix carbon A max -asymptomatic did not alleviate rates carboxylation V Cmax electron transport J chlorophylls , b + same type leaves. -symptomatic however, indicating different mode action EDU between Extensive herbivory occurred only AOZ-exposed plants, leading suppressed production, also led similar (EDU0 × vs. EOZ). 2016, carry-over evaluated following cropping transplantation into new plots. Effects preceding extended third season form ratoon effect Although when applied there no absence 2016. The this study provide mechanistic understandings modes enlighten cultivation as crop.

Mechanisms of ethylenediurea (EDU) induced ozone protection: Reexamination of free radical scavenger systems in snap bean

Ethylenediurea (EDU), N[2-(2-oxo-l-imidazolidinyl) ethyl]-N'-phenylurea is known to prevent ozone (03) damage to leaf tissues. However, the mechanisms of protection are unclear. We tested the hypothesis that EDU protects against 03 damage by scavenging hydroxyl free radicals (OH). An in vitro study involving the use of high-performance liquid chromatography equipped with an electrochemical dete...

Ozone production in transpacific Asian pollution plumes and implications for ozone air quality in California

[1] We examine the ozone production efficiency in transpacific Asian pollution plumes, and the implications for ozone air quality in California, by using aircraft and surface observations in April–May 2002 from the Intercontinental Transport and Chemical Transformation 2002 (ITCT 2K2) campaign off the California coast and the Pacific Exploration of Asian Continental Emission–B (PEACE-B) campaig...

Metal uptake and allocation in trees grown on contaminated land: implications for biomass production.

Phytostabilization aims to reduce environmental and health risks arising from contaminated soil. To be economically attractive, plants used for phytostabilization should produce valuable biomass. This study investigated the biomass production and metal allocation to foliage and wood of willow (Salix viminalis L.), poplar (Populus monviso), birch (Betula pendula), and oak (Quercus robur) on five...

The effects of sodium erythorbate and ethylenediurea on photosynthetic function of ozone-exposed loblolly pine seedlings

In an open-top chamber study in east Texas, ozone-sensitive loblolly pine (Pinus taedu L.) seedlings were treated with either the antioxidant Ozoban (74.5% sodium erythorbate active ingredient (a.i.)) at 0, 1030, or 2060 mg liter-’ or ethylenediurea (EDU 50% a.i.) at 0, 150, or 300 ppm every 2 weeks while being subjected to a range of ozone exposures beginning in April 1994. The ozone exposures...

Development of Technologies for Sensing Ozone in Ambient Air.

Ozone (O3) gas is widely used as a strong oxidizing agent for many purposes, such as the decomposition/removal of organic contaminants and photoresist, and the deodorization/disinfection of air and water. However, ozone is highly toxic to the human body when the air concentration exceeds about 1 ppm. Therefore, there is increasing demand for simple, sensitive, reliable, and cost-effective techn...
